ABOUT ABOUT

As the Great Depression burdened the shoulders of America, more than 80 million people flocked to the picture-shows. They escaped their reality with screw-ball comedies, Busby Berkeley musicals, gangland dramas and sweeping epics during the “Golden Age of Hollywood.” James Cagney was the ultimate gangster, and the Marx Brothers joyfully mocked the sacred cows of finance, patriotism, and marriage. The rags-to-riches plot of 42nd Street made it a runaway musical, while King Kong, Dorothy, and Toto, carried audiences into worlds beyond their imagination. The film of the age, Gone With The Wind, taught Depression audiences that “tomorrow is another day!”
